Social Media Is Your Friend During Disasters

With Tropical Storm Debby lingering off the coast of Tampa, we’ve been keeping an eye on the weather reports, tracking hashtags and doing everything we can to make sure that even if we lost power, we would still be connected. Sure, we have our radio with batteries, but we are in the “sharing and over sharing days” where we like to stay connected by conversing with others through the Internet and text. This is by far the quickest way to update friends, family and neighbors of the weather or disaster conditions.
Here are 6 ways we’ve prepared for a worst case scenario:
- All of our gadgets are fully charged and still plugged in including the Macbook, Android phone, iPad, and the Zaggsparq.
- We have downloaded the Weather.com app and have set Severe weather alerts on both the iPad and Android phone.
- We have the Aquabox easily accessible in case we have to go out in the downpours.
- We are tracking Tweets in our area by using Monitter.com and searching #Debby only in our general location.
- We have connected with and are following all of the local media on Facebook and Twitter.
- We are doing our part to pass along relevant, correct information.
Here are a few extra ways you can prepare:
- Make sure you have enabled text messaging to Twitter with the code 40404 (Twitter SMS Support)
- Set up Facebook SMS capabilities
- Set an alert for your local news on Twitter so you can be pinged when they Tweet.
Please be very careful when spreading information. Rumors start quickly and spread even quicker on the Internet.
